May Wines of the Month

White - Two Sisters Sauvignon Blanc 2016 Niagara Peninsula $55

If you haven't been to this dynamic and elaborate estate in Niagara, take the time to do so. You won't be disappointed. Producing a consistent Sauvignon Blanc in Ontario can be challenging year after year, but I must say this winery gets it right.

A crisp but very classy style of Sauvignon Blanc makes this a step above other local options. Clean, vibrant, but texturally complete for a local white. Attention to detail in the vineyard and winery for winemaker Adam Pearce and the Marotta sisters/owners are the ultimate expression of what Ontario and its sub-regions do best. They have made their mark quickly in the Ontario wine scene and we should expect to see great things from this winery in the future.

A great match with new dishes off our menu, Grilled Calamari or the Detox Salad.

Red - Burrowing Owl Merlot 2012 Okanagan Valley $79

This personal favourite for many years has always delivered such a great drinking experience. All of the wines they make are first class, but their Merlot is such a highlight for me from their wine portfolio. Based in Oliver BC, in the Okanagan Valley, their quest for 'balance' in the process of respecting the land and being minimalists in the winery, have garnered them much praise since their inception in 1988. A beautiful piece of land borders Washington State and in the arid summer months, the reds ripen to a phenomenal degree. Merlot has been given a bad rap for some time now and I think wines like these showcase the elegance and versatility of the grape when treated properly from start to finish.

A medium to full bodied expression opens up in the decanter and glass with ripe blackberry, plums and cherry skins. Moderate oak aging bring some baking spices into play and round out the wine wonderfully.

Pair this red up with the 10oz Prime Striploin!
